Don't Starve More Save Slots

Posted on  by admin
  1. I've added a mod to get more save files. My newest file on save slot 6 got now connected to my 'main' save file, which used to be saved in save slot 1. If I could just move the connected worlds on save slot 6 back to save slot 1, I wouldn't need the mod anymore and my original 'main' save file would be in it's supposed place again.

One of my favourite things about Don’t Starve and Don’t Starve Together is the ability to mod both games. While I will admit, some mods are built for each specific game that I wish were compatible for both, there are hundreds of other mods that can fill in the gaps.

Using mods is going to be based on personal preference and based on how much you want to alter gameplay. So, the following list will cover some of the essential mods you will need when playing Don’t Starve Together, some that simply make gameplay more straightforward, some that make gameplay overpowered and some that simply help the social aspect of Don’t Starve Together.

How to Survive a Hound Wave in Don't Starve. So you managed to survive a week! But upon your survival, the game seems to deem the difficulty to be rather low, and thus sends Hounds after you.

MODS THAT ARE ESSENTIAL TO DON’T STARVE TOGETHER (DST)

GLOBAL POSITIONS by rezecib

While I understand why Klei chose to make it so you can’t see teammates on the map in Don’t Starve Together, I think it’s idiotic.

Global Positions will allow you to see an icon for each of your allies in real-time and will also let you to see the parts of their maps that they have revealed. I know, I know, cheating!! But, I at least recommend using Global Positions the first time you play through Don’t Starve Together with your friends.

While players can use the in-game Cartographer’s Desk to share the parts of the map that they have explored, the Cartographer’s Table just seems like an unnecessary barrier. Get to cheatin’ folks!

MINIMAP HUD by squeek

I hate games that don’t have Minimaps, and I especially hate that Don’t Starve Together don’t have a built-in minimap since the game requires you to be pretty much always moving.

I’ll admit that the Minimap HUD isn’t the most fantastic Minimap, and it doesn’t allow you to interact with the Minimap as smoothly as a game like FFXIV, but it’s still better than no Minimap.

I use the Minimap most when I’m trying to figure out how close I am or far away from an area. The Minimap HUD isn’t designed for players to do a lot of exploration on. Instead, players should look at their main Map using “M” and revert to their Minimap once they are already en-route to the destination.

Although the Minimap HUD allows players to scroll through the whole map, there is no trigger to re-center the map, making you lose your placement often. Although losing your placement on the Minimap isn’t the absolute worst thing a player can do, it does get annoying if you’re trying to be as efficient as possible.

GEOMETRIC PLACEMENT by rezecib

Alright, alright, Geometric Placement isn’t absolutely necessary for Don’t Starve, but it does make planting so much easier in the game, especially if you are trying to align everything.

The cool thing about Geometric Placing is that players can hyper customize their settings, which can be altered to make planting particular objects even easier.

Players will be able to choose what shape grid they can plant on, how far the grid expands, the colour of the grid, and whether or not they want to see a ghost of the item before it is placed.

Geometric Placement is the only way you’re going to make sure your world is beautiful!

ICE FLINGOMATIC RANGE CHECK by Black Mirror

Honestly, Ice Flingomatics confuse me. I don’t understand why Klei didn’t make it so you can an Ice Flingomatic’s range at all times. Well, I guess not being able to see the Ice Flingomatic’s range at all times makes it more challenging to ensure that your bushes and resources are safe, but is that really much of a problem?

The Ice Flingomatic Range Check allows players to make the Ice Flingomatic show its range for as little as 10 seconds, but can also leave the range on indefinitely. Again, I’m not sure why this wasn’t the case, to begin with. So get to downloading and enjoy your Spring/Summer!

BETTER ICE FLINGOMATIC by Nyoraia

If you want to take things one step further with the Ice Flingomatic, consider getting yourself the Better Ice Flingomatic Mod, which will allow players to customize a variety of options on their Ice Flingomatic including:

🎮 Adjusting fuel consumption

🎮 Adjusting the range of the Ice Flingomatic

🎮 The ability to ignore Campfires, Fire Pits, Night Lights, Endothermic Fires and Endothermic Fire Pits without using emergency mode.

There are a few customizations players can make using this mod that will require players to go into game files, so I would recommend reading the full description to learn your capabilities.

DISPLAY FOOD VALUES by 潇666

There are tons of mods that help give players information about food and resources, but I feel like the Display Food Values mod does a great job of making it pretty and also share all the information I personally want.

Display Food Values shows players the amount of Hunger, Sanity and Health a food will give players. Players can also click Alt on their keyboard to see how long until food rots. If players want a more specific

LESS LAGS by Astro

One of the most infuriating parts of playing Don’t Starve Together is the amount of lag that players will potentially experience, especially if they are running servers off of their computers.

Less Lags provides players with a variety of options that will help reduce the lag, the majority focus on allowing items to rot and in turn disappear or get deleted if they are not picked up off the ground.

Make sure you spend some time configuring this Mod because you will end up with deleted items that you didn’t expect to say goodbye to. Well, that is, unless you turn certain settings off first.

SIMPLE HEALTH BAR DST by DYC

I’m a huge fan of being able to see how much health enemies have, especially when they have large pools of health.

Simple Health Bar provides players with a variety of styles of health bars that allow players to indicate whether players will be able to kill the enemy they are up against soon or will die to them.

MODS THAT MAKE GAMEPLAY IN DON’T STARVE TOGETHER (DST) EASIER OR SMOOTHER

50 SAVESLOTS by tekture

For players who are fed up with the amount of servers they are allowed to have on their computer, fret no longer as 50 Saveslots does exactly as the name says… provides you with 50 Saveslots.

I know as a blogger I’ve found it disheartening when I’ve had to delete an old world and while players can save or backup their files in other folders, they no longer need to do the manual labour with this mod.

Please do be careful when using this mod though as is with any mod that affects save files as there is always the chance that your save files will get corrupted. I know, I know, I just said that you won’t have to do manual labour, but back up your files at least the first time you enable this mod (and of course, if you ever disable it)

SHOW ME (ORIGIN) by star

Although not completely necessary, the Show Me (Origin) mod is a mod that gives players a ton of helpful information about mobs and resources they will be interacting with.

Show Me will give players information about a mob’s HP when hovering over, how many uses an item has, spoilage rates, Insulation value and more.

The Show Me (Origin) mod is not absolutely necessary, mainly because other mods can fill its place, though it’s going to depend on what your personal preference for display is.

COMBINED STATUS by rezecib

The Combined Status mod is the first mod I ever installed while playing Don’t Starve Together (DST), and I have to tell you sometimes I forget that the Combined Status hud isn’t the original HUD in DST.

Combined Status is a client mod that allows players to customize the size of the HUD and whether their HUD displays the following information:

ENABLED BY DEFAULT:

🎮 Show what season the player is in

🎮 The current moon cycle

🎮 A prediction of the future Full Moon

🎮 The player’s exact body temperature

🎮 Shows players Hunger, Sanity and Health stats without the need to hover over

🎮 Shows players Hunger, Sanity and Health maximum when hovered over

🎮 Reveals what day the player is on and how many days until the next season

DISABLED BY DEFAULT:

🎮 The world’s exact temperature

Although I have to admit that the Combined Status mod isn’t a requirement to play on Don’t Starve Together, it does make gameplay a lot easier, especially when you’re just starting out and learning mechanics. Combined Status is most helpful for the temperature information it provides, although players can also use their Thermal Stone as an indicator for body heat.

Combined Status is especially useful for those who are playing on a more static server where players hop in and out as they desire. Using Combined Status will always ensure that players who jump into the server know what season is currently in progress and whether or not one of the seasonal Giants is on the way.

Players will also be able to make the most use of Full Moons and will always make sure that they are appropriately dressed for Winter, Spring and Summer.

I’m sure anyone who plays Wickerbottom will appreciate Combined Status as players will always know whether or not they have to spam Applied Horticulture before the Winter.

BACKPACK SLOT by Jacubowy

The Backpack Slot mod is by far one of the most controversial mods we use while playing Don’t Starve Together. If you’re a purist and refuse to give yourself extra inventory, then don’t use the Backpack mod. However, if you’re like me and you hate taking off equipment and moving it around, then the Backpack Slot is a great mod that doesn’t make players too overpowered.

In reality, the Backpack Slot will give you one extra inventory slot and will make it so you don’t have to drop your backpack whenever battling mobs.

FINDER MOD (SERVER VERSION AND WORKING) by Serp

For players who find it difficult to remember which chest they placed an item in, the Finder Mod (Server version and working) is a great mod addition for you as it will highlight chests that contain the item you are currently holding.

Players will also be able to hover over items while in a crafting tab in order to find items, which many similar mods are unable to do.

SMART CROCK POT + PORTABLE by Isogash

I’m such a big fan of the Smart Cock Pot mod, but the Smart Crock Pot + Portable is updated to include Warly’srecipes as well.

The Smart Crock Pot + Portable allows players to receive a prediction for what their meal will be after placing 4 Ingredients into the Crock Pot. It goes without saying that the Smart Crock Pot mod is beneficial for players who are unfamiliar with Crock Pot recipes and want to make sure that they are correctly using their ingredients.

Players are also able to change out ingredients after the Smart Crock Pot has predicted a recipe. Changing out ingredients can help make sure you don’t end up with the wrong meal, or may also help you test out other recipes.

It’s important to remember that Smart Crock Pot does not do the work for you. Players will have to already know the basics of creating a Crock Pot meal before using the mod.

WORMHOLE ICONS by Ryuu

I have a terrible memory and always have difficulty remember where Wormholes lead to. Well, that’s not completely honest. I usually remember where Wormholes lead when I’m playing single-player Don’t Starve, but if I’m playing Don’t Starve Together once a week or less, expect me to lose lots of Sanity trying to figure out where Wormholes lead.

Wormhole Icons is a client mod that changes the colours of Wormholes on the map. Wormhole Icons will not appear for all players, however, can be useful for those forgetful players… like me!

ZOOM+by coryinthedank

If you’re anything like me, you’re someone who hates how close the camera is on your character in Don’t Starve Together. While I can tolerate the camera the majority of the time, there are some boss battles where I want to be able to see more of my screen and Zoom+ does just that.

Players will be able to use their mouse wheel, or whatever trigger they have chosen to zoom in and out, to zoom as far as they can as if they are looking at themselves on a world map.

Zoom+ is especially useful for Wurt players who have to build structures for Merms, Winona players who have to build Catapults and Generators, and Wickerbottom players who have to stay in the base and farm, just kidding!

I’m going to warn you in advance, having Zoom+ on will allow you to Telepoof or Soul Hop much further than without it. Having that kind of places this mod in the “over powered” category.

AUTO OPEN/CLOSE DOOR by charlie

If you’re as lazy as me, you’re someone who built pressure plate doors in Minecraft and you’re someone who would get excited by a Mod that opens and closes doors for you.

Nothing makes me feel more like a princess than this Mod and truthfully it comes in really handy when you have Pig Farms or other forms of Mobs behind gates.

STOP STUMPS by Ryuu

I have to admit how awesome it is to have the Stop Stumps mod installed on my servers because it makes all uses of the Shovel, other than transferring resources, obsolete.

I know, I know, it’s a bit overpowered to not need to use a Shovel to dig up stumps, but I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve built extra shovels just because I keep forgetting them at the base.

Down with Shovels. STOP STUMPS!!!

SKIN QUEUE by Electroely

Unravelling items can be extremely tedius, espcially if have a number of items with duplicates.

While Klei recently added the capability to unwravel multiple duplicates of the same item, what Klei didn’t add was a single button that allows players to unravel all items.

Skin Queue does both that and allows players to queue the items that they do wish to weave.

I will say, the one downside to this mod is the fact that it does not unwravel all types of skins, leaving the skins which can be sold on the Steam store. So while I love the Skin Queue, I will say there’s still a few things I wish were better.

In cases where players are left with duplicates, they can manually select them and put them into the queue.

SERVER SIZE by alainmcd

For players who are upset by the fact that they cannot host more than 6 friends on a computer run server, fret no more as the Server Size mod now allows you to host up to 64 players.

The only issue with the Server Size mod is the fact that most PCs will not be captable of handling 64 players, so please use at your own risk.

I would strongly recommend capping your limit at 10, though this will really depend on how powerful your computer is.

OVER POWERED MODS IN DON’T STARVE TOGETHER (DST)

DISPLAY ATTACK RANGE by ClumsyNoob

Are you new to Don’t Starve Together? Well, I have the absolute best Mod for you. Although Display Attack Range is a newer mod, I would say that I’m very impressed with the results.

Not only does the Mod provide players with information about how large the attack range is of enemies, but it will also show players when enemies are about to attack and when players have a chance to give the mob a beating.

Display Attack Range is an extremely powerful Mod to have on your server.

I will say, I hate the fact that this is a server Mod… I think it should be a client mod because it’s so invasive, but since I don’t fully understand how Mods work, I can’t tell you whether or not it would be possible to get this mod working from the client end.

DST WHERE’S MY BEEFALO by Afro1967

By far, one of the most powerful mods you can get in Don’t Starve Together is the DST Where’s My Beefalo mod which initially only added Beefalo icons to the Map. Still, the mod has expanded to show the following resources and mobs on the map:

🎮 Animal Track

🎮 Bat

🎮 Bearger

🎮 Bishop

🎮 Bishop Nightmare

🎮 Blue Mushrooms

🎮 Bunnyman

Don't Starve More Save Slots Zynga

🎮 Carrots

🎮 Chester’s EyeBone

🎮 Deerclops

🎮 Dirt Pile

🎮 Dragonfly

🎮 Fire Hound

🎮 Fireflies

🎮 Flint

🎮 Green Mushrooms

🎮 Hound

🎮 Ice Hound

🎮 Knight

🎮 Knight Nightmare

🎮 Krampus

🎮 Leif Sparse

🎮 Mandrakes

🎮 Minotaur

🎮 Molehill Burrows

🎮 Moose Egg

🎮 MooseGoose

🎮 Pig Head

🎮 Rabbit Holes

🎮 Red Mushrooms

🎮 Rocks

🎮 Rocky the Rock Lobsters

🎮 Rook

🎮 Rook Nightmare

🎮 Skeleton

🎮 Spider Dropper

🎮 Spider Hider

🎮 Spider Queen

🎮 Summer Koalefants

🎮 Tentacle

🎮 Tentacle Pillar

🎮 Volt Goats

🎮 Walrus

🎮 Warg

🎮 Winter Koalefants

🎮 Worm

In reality, I think that the DST Where’s My Beefalo mod is unnecessary since, in reality, players will not need to know where the majority of the resources and mobs mentioned in the list above are. I will say, having DST Where’s My Beefalo with the Map Revealer Mod, makes gameplay ridiculously easy. I’ll also admit that I’ve done that a few times when I first started playing Don’t Starve so that I could have an easier time surviving.

In my opinion, there’s no shame in spoiling some things for yourself to start off with. In Don’t Starve, there’s enough to do for you always to be surprised with. Not only that, once you get bored of the base game, some mods add new characters or creatures into the game, making replayability virtually endless.

MAP REVEALER FOR DST by Kuloslav

Can you say overpowered? The Map Revealer for DST is exactly as it sounds and takes out all surprises from playing Don’t Starve Together.

While exploring and discovering is a big part of why Don’t Starve Together is such fun, sometimes when you’re playing with others, it’s a lot better to have the whole map revealed, especially if you want to relax while you play.

Players will be able to reveal the map on command and can choose to rehide the map if they would like, though I don’t see why you’d want to waste time revealing it just to hide it again.

I’d say use this mod sparingly, but it can really enhance gameplay for new group players.

STACKS V2.0 by cr4shmaster

Although I don’t use it often, Stacks V2.0 can come in especially handy for those of you running your own public servers who are struggling with griefers who either steal resources or burn down chests that have resources.

Stacks V2.0 is customizable and will allow players to choose how many of certain objects players will be able to hold in their inventory at a time, though, players should be aware that these settings must be changed before entering the server.

I usually turn the amount up to 150 for every type of object, that way players can have a healthy amount of stuff in their inventory without the need to leave too many objects on the floor.

Say goodbye to server lag, hopefully!

RESTART by Skull

Have you ever wanted to change characters and couldn’t figure out how? Well, I’ll cover the legit way to change characters in Don’t Starve Together on a later day. Until I write a guide for how to legitimately change characters in DST, enjoy your time changing characters using Restart.

Players can type in #restart in their chat window, and after a few seconds of charging, players will be transported back to the character selection. Players will lose all the items in their inventory and will return back to the Florid Postern.

Warning: Don’t change character in the Winter unless you are going to be able to get back to your base with minimal resources or have a friend to come pick you up. Restart isn’t as streamlined as you wish it were, but if you really think about it, all Restart does is force the character change/player kick command.

ICE MAKER 3000 by KH4N3R

For those of you who have had any experience with the sweet, sweet Shipwrecked, you know all of the joys of crafting the Ice Maker 3000. Well, with this Mod, players will be able to have their very own Ice Maker 3000 that provides them with endless supplies of Ice. Say goodbye to needing to run out in Winter to mine Glaciers. No need anymore mama!

GEARS MAKING MACHINE by BargaturBey

I kind of feel scummy for sharing this mod because I feel like it is completely game-breaking, though before I even start talking about the Gears Making Machine I have to say that you will only be able to use this or the Ice Maker 3000, in my opinion the Gears Making Machine is more useful, especially if there is a WX-78 player on your server.

Gears come in handy when trying to keep food fresh or when trying to build powerful weapons so make sure you start saving.

Players will have the option to be able to build the Gears Making Machine with an easy recipe or a more advanced recipe that will also require players to use more items to craft is and provide it more fuel.

Online

Players looking to use the Ice Maker 3000 and the Gear Making Machine will have to use this mod.

[Hamlet] Lamp Post by KaiserKatz

I can’t deny how overpowered the Lamp Post Mod is, but the truth is… Lamp Posts exist in Hamlet and the good lord, of whom I do not believe in, knows that I hate dying to Charlie. What I hate more than dying to Charlie is having new players enter a server and die to Charlie in a matter of seconds only to type in chat, “pls, where’s base, how do I res?”

Light up that home ho’s. You’re going to appreciate it.

HAMLET STUFF by MMR

If you don’t want to stop with the Lamp Post, players can dive deep into the pool and enjoy all of the objects from the Hamlet DLC, which is a single-player version of Don’t Starve.

Players will mostly see cosmetic changes, though there are a number of items and weapons that are brought into the Mod, though not Mobs.

ACTIONQUEUE REBORN by eXiGe

For players who don’t want to do the work of planting things like Berry Bushes, Grass or Pinecones, grab the ActionQueue Reborn Mod as it allows players to automate many of the tasks players find mundane or boring.

Some tasks include being able to deploy items or traps, feed the player, craft items, place signs, or place turf.

Players will still have to toggle actions, but will find themselves saving a lot of time that they would have wasted otherwise.

MISCELLANEOUS/EASE OF ACCESS MODS TO HAVE IN DON’T STARVE TOGETHER (DST)

GESTURE WHEEL by rezecib

The Gesture Wheel is by far not a mod that anyone needs while playing Don’t Starve Together; however, it is an excellent way for players to begin learning the different emotes they can use while playing Don’t Starve Together.

Since the Gesture Wheel is a client mod, it will not affect other players; however, when players press “G” with it installed a wheel of emotes will show up.

Players will be able to hover over the emote they would like to express and will also see the command necessary to use the emote under it. Once the emote has been selected, the character will immediately begin expressing the emote.

FIX FOR TOO MANY ITEMS by TheMightyPikachu

Do you want absolutely every single item in the game, access to god mod, access to 1-Shot mechanics, creative mode and more? Well, look no further than Fix for Too Many Items.

Fix for Too Many Items is mostly helpful for those who want to AFK farm and will remove the majority of the fun in the game. So, I would recommend not using it when you’re playing Don’t Starve “for reals.”

LEVEL UP! by 󰀛Baku

Family members always make fun of me for how much I love to grind while playing video games and it was a bit frustrating that Don’t Starve doesn’t have any ways of grinding really.

Well, it’s time to change that with the Level Up! Mod which allows players to receive extra stats (Damage, Health, Sanity and Hunger).

Players will be able to set how easy they would like it to be to receive bonus stats and can also make their character start with reduced stats to start off with.

DYNAMIC HEALTH SCALING by Farxodor

If you’re on a very large server, chances are you’re bursting down Seasonal Giants like the Deerclops and Moose/Goose or even the Bee Queen very quickly. Think about getting Dynamic Health Scaling which will affect the following Mobs:

🎮 Deerclops

🎮Moose/Goose (and Mosslings)

🎮 Bearger

🎮 Dragonfly

🎮 Ancient Guardian

🎮 ToadStool

🎮 Bee Queen

🎮 Reanimated Skeleton

🎮 Varg

🎮 Ewecus

🎮 Koalefant

🎮 Beefalo

🎮 Volt Goat

🎮 Buzzard

🎮 Rock Lobster

🎮 No Eyed Deer

🎮 Pigs

🎮 Merm

🎮 MacTusk

🎮 Slurtle

🎮 All spiders

🎮 Tall Birds

🎮 Krampus

🎮 Tree Guard

🎮 Spider Queen

🎮 Clockworks

🎮 Shadow pieces

🎮 Houndius Shootius

CHARACTER SPECIFIC MODS

There’s nothing better than being able to buff one of your favourite characters, especially if there’s an annoying aspect about their kit that could be easily fixed.

The following are my favourite mods for specific characters:

ABIGAIL KEYBINDS by Electroely

Abigail can be annoying to deal with, especially if players aren’t good at quickly switching from their mouse to their keyboard and vice versa.

While the Wendy Rework helped make Abigail so much more useful, Abigail’s new keybinds will let Wendy players use X to summon or return Abigail and use R to rile her up or soothe here.

Of course, the keybinds are configurable, so if players have something else the would like to use or have gaming mice, they can use one of those buttons or keybinds instead.

MINI WURT REWORK by Electroely

I have to say that the Mini Wurt Rework is probably one of the first Mods I have ever tried that I didn’t know I needed.

Being someone who changes characters fairly frequently in order to make the most out of things, I have recently become a Wurt main.

Wurt is a fun character but just like Webber, while her followers are powerful, there are some times where you have to question… what was the point of bringing this character into The Constant again?

The Mini Wurt Rework Mod actually provides players with a number of reworks including:

🎮The Merm King’s effects apply to both the overworld and caves, meaning that players will not have to place two Merm Kings.

🎮The Merm King’s rewards will change depending on the king of fish and the weight of the fish. The better the fish, the better the reward with a focus on weight.

🎮Wurt no longer loses Sanity when she is wet or holding wet items.

🎮For balance purposes, Wurt gains wetness 50% faster than the default.

🎮Wurt overheats faster when she is dry and she is slower when wet, making Waterballoons especially helpful in Summer.

🎮The Merm King no longer eats Corn Cod or Popperfish as they include fish in their recipe.

🎮Fish in Wurt’s Inventory doesn’t spoil faster when wet.

🎮Merms and Merm Guards will return to their homes if they are left too far and not fed recently. If players do not use the Mod, Merms will remain in the place they are currently when they are no longer fed.

🎮The Merm King will not spawn Merm Guards when fed while starving.

🎮The Marm King’s Guards will return to him if something dies before he finishes summoning.

🎮The Royal-In-Progress’s name can now be seen properly in caves.

MINOR WINONA BUFF by One World Unemployed At Home

I will say that I don’t feel that Winona is in particular need of a buff, but I won’t say no to some extra stats when I can get them.

The Minor Winona Buff will provide players with:

🎮50 extra Hunger

🎮50 extra Health.

🎮5% damage reduction

🎮5% bonus damage

🎮5% movement speed

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT MODS

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A CLIENT MOD AND A SERVER MOD?

Client mods are mods that only affect the player’s client who downloads and enables it. Client Mods most commonly change HUD visuals, alter graphics, and can allow easy access to console commands.

Client mods cannot customize character or mob gameplay, so it’s best to think of these as the mods that can strictly change visuals without altering gameplay.

Server mods, on the other hand, are anything and everything in between, including new characters, new mechanics and changes to the way that the game mode ultimately functions.

While server mods can affect the way things are displayed when it comes to mobs, there doesn’t seem to be a server mod that alters the actual HUD.

CAN I RUN A NEW MOD ON AN ALREADY ESTABLISHED SERVER?

Yes, players may run new mods on already established servers; however, mods may crash if they are incompatible. I would recommend making a copy of your DST savefile. The best guide I found on how to do this is here.

CAN I STOP RUNNING A MOD ON A SERVER?

Similar to running a new mod on an already established server, players run the risk of the game crashing when mods are deactivated. If you’re not experiencing any issues with lag, or the mod isn’t causing any noticeable harm to gameplay don’t disable it. Though, there’s no risk with testing it on a copy of the server.

I hate Winter. I tolerate Winter in Don’t Starve and Don’t Starve Together, but don’t get me started on the Canadian winters I am trying so hard to escape.

Winter appears in single-player Don’t Starve (DS & RoG) and Don’t Starve Together. Winter lasts 16 days by default, making it one of the shortest seasons in Don’t Starve and Don’t Starve Together, though it is not the easiest.

There are many stages in the single-player Adventure Mode that have varying lengths of winter, some stages will even start in Winter, and some stages are always Winter. There are also a few mechanics in Sandbox Mode that will automatically change the season to Winter.

While surviving the Winter is more difficult than surviving the Autumn, Winter is not unbearable if you know what you need to do.

The following guide will take you through all you need to know about how to survive your first winter and what resources you will want to prioritize to ensure that you have an easy Spring and Summer.

I’m going to treat this guide as a “you just started Winter and have no resources or anything prebuilt from Autumn.”

HOW TO TELL IT’S WINTER IN DON’T STARVE & DON’T STARVE TOGETHER

It can be confusing what season you are in when playing Don’t Starve and Don’t Starve Together, especially if you do not have a mod that changes your HUD to tell you what season it is.

Players who play Don’t Starve and Don’t Starve Together without mods will need to build a Thermal Measurer (Science Tab), which will help a player establish when there is a season change coming. Once a Thermal Measurer turns blue, consider that Winter has arrived.

CHARACTERS THAT ARE GOOD IN THE COLD/GENERAL WINTER

The most important thing to playing Don’t Starve and Don’t Starve Together is selecting a character who’s playstyle matches yours. While I wouldn’t necessarily advise picking a character based on whether they are good in a season, some characters can deal with specific mechanics very well, while others lag behind.

The only character that I would recommend avoiding altogether if you’re struggling with Winter is Willow because she’s just awful to deal with.

The following are the characters who make Winter survival a bit easier. If you’re having a lot of difficulties surviving the first Winter, you may want to check one out.

Note: I will also mention characters later on in the post who are exceptional in the Winter, however, not because of temperature control.

WILSON

Wilson is the default character who was meant to help withstand the cold. You see, Wilson grows a beard that protects him from freezing for 135 seconds when it is at full size.

135 seconds of Insulation is nothing to laugh at when playing Don’t Starve and Don’t Starve Together, as the items with the best Insulation in the game have 240 (Beefalo Hat, Puffy Vest or Hibearnation Vest [RoG]). In contrast, mid-tier items supply only 120 (Winter Hat & Tam o’ Shanter) seconds of Insulation.

WEBBER

Players can also choose to play Webber, who receives 67.5 Insulation from his beard at full-grown. In my opinion, Webber’s beard isn’t an excellent choice to pick Webber for the Winter as Webber’s beard more useful for Silk. If you’re going to choose Webber, at least make yourself a Winter Hat by using 4 Beefalo Wool and 4 Silk.

Webber can be helpful for providing Don’t Starve Together teams with Silk, but the majority of his benefits come from being able to train Spiders.

WOODIE

Surprisingly, Woodie is looked over as a strong survivor in the Winter, but nothing more could be untrue. I guess the thing about Woodie is that he is a complicated character who ultimately has a different form in both single-player Don’t Starve and Don’t Starve Together.

In Don’t Starve Together, Woodie players will receive an extra 45 Insulation from Woodie’s beard, which unfortunately doesn’t carry-over to single-player.

Woodie players will also be Immune to freezing as a Werebeaver in single-player Don’t Starve (DS, RoG, SW & HAM), but will only receive 240 Immunity in Don’t Starve Together (DST)

All-in-all, while Woodie doesn’t receive much insulation, he sure is useful for collecting Gold Nuggets, Rocks and Logs in the Winter.

WINTER GETS COLD, AND YOU FREEZE FAST

One of the biggest surprises, when you get to your first Winter, is how fast the temperature drops in the Constant. When a player’s body temperature gets too cold, the player will begin losing Health.

You must have at least a Thermal Stone to survive the Winter. Dress, armour and other gear could be assembled throughout the Winter season if the player was not prepared.

Thermal Stones will warm up while you stand by a fire and will glow Orange while hot, yellow when cooling off and will turn blue when they are cold. In Don’t Starve (DS & RoG) Thermal Stones do not have any durability; however, in Don’t Starve Together (DST), Thermal Stones will lose durability if they cool down too much. So, if a player wants to make sure they don’t have to build another Thermal Stone, they should always make sure to keep the Thermal Stone warm.

When Thermal Stones are warm, they emit a light glow that is enough for you to stay safe from Charlie. If you do not need to use a Torch to set trees on fire, I would recommend using Thermal Stone’s light to continue farming resources throughout the Winter.

Clothes do not warm up a Player, so in reality, clothes are not necessary for survival in Winter. Clothes will insulate a character and make sure that their temperature doesn’t drop any lower after a Thermal Stone cools. So, if you’re just chilling by the Fire Pit, make sure to take off your clothes and relax! In reality, you don’t have to wear Insulated clothes until the moment the Thermal Stone stops working. Mind-blowing, eh?

Players must know how to receive immediate warmth upon the first day of Winter as travelling to get any resources will require a heat-up. I would recommend building yourself a Fire Pit and Camp Fire in advance by clicking build and then clicking another area of the screen. Building a Fire Pit, Campfire or any other large structure will not take an inventory slot. Having a source of Fire pre-built will also ensure that you do not freeze to death or die to Charlie.

Make sure you’re shaving Beefalo with a Razor throughout the Winter as Beefalo Wool is one of the best fuel sources in Don’t Starve. Each piece of Beefalo Wool will fuel a Fire by 25%, making Beefalo Wool as useful as Logs, Manure, and Charcoal. I usually keep a stack of Beefalo Wool in my inventory at all times so I can spark any Fire Pits that are built on the map.

The only benefit to it being this cold is that food takes 25% longer to expire, making the need for an Ice Box less cumbersome. Though, I recommend getting some Gears and building one as Ice never melts in one.

The most important thing to remember about temperature is that the Day is the warmest and temperatures drop drastically in the Dusk and Night.

THE DAY CYCLE CHANGES

It’s important to understand that the day cycle will continuously change while playing Don’t Starve (DS, RoG, SW & HAM) and Don’t Starve Together (DST).

During Winter, Day will become shorter while Night and Dusk will become much longer. Being that Night and Dusk are longer, players will experience more Sanity loss in the Winter, having them rely on foods and clothes that provide Sanity.

Since Day is so short in Winter, players will have often have to travel in the Night to get to the places where they must do chores in the Day.

If a player does not have enough gear to survive the cold in Winter, but would still like to travel, I would recommend burning down a few trees with a Torch. Make sure that you’re not standing too close to the tree, but it will heat both you and your Thermal Stone up.

Burnt trees will also provide you with Charcoal, which can be used to make extra Crock Pots or as fuel for Fire Pits.

The most important thing about Winter travel is to build multiple Fire Pits across your map to ensure that you always have a spot to get warm, especially if you choose to travel during the Night.

WINTER FOOD SOURCES

During Winter, many of the food sources in Don’t Starve (DS, RoG & DST) change, causing players to seek out other resources to stabilize them through the season.

While survival will be much easier if players have prepared for Winter, players can still survive successfully if they understand the changes in food mechanics.

The following are all of the food sources that are still available to players in the Winter and whether or not they are dependent.

BERRIES THAT ARE LEFT ON BUSHES (NOT DEPENDABLE & CAN DEPLETE)

Dependent on what you were using as filler during the Autumn, chances are you have a few Berries left in your inventory.

The sad reality is that Berry Bushes “don’t grow” (grow extremely, extremely slowly) during Winter; however, if Berries were already grown on the bush, they will stay entirely fresh all Winter. Berries that are left on the bush before Winter has started should be left there until the player is in dire need.

Berries, in my opinion, become the snack food to keep you sustained until you get to a Crock Pot.

Similarly, Farms do not work in the Winter, so if you’ve got Applied Horticulture, make sure to use it a few times before Winter. Saplings and Grass Tufts will also grow much slower, so gather as much as you can before the season change.

MINI GLACIERS & ICE (YOUR NEW FAVOURITE FILLER)

Mini Glaciers are completely renewable in Don’t Starve Together and will often begin freezing in the Autumn. The great news is that one Mini Glacier will provide you with 3-4 Ice when a Mini Glacier is in its largest form.

When playing Don’t Starve, make sure that you only farm Mini Glaciers when you are out of filler, or try to focus on making foods that do not require a Crock Pot, like Jerky.

Don t starve video game

Saving Ice can come in helpful, especially if you want to construct an Ice Flingomatic, which will keep you safe from Fires caused by Spring’s Thunderstorms or Summer’s Wildfires.

Depending on how big your base is, you may need about 3 Ice Flingomatics.

RABBITS (NOT FULLY DEPENDABLE)

Slots

Rabbits are still considered a stable food source in Winter. Though Rabbits are still a food source, players should only be using Rabbits as a food source if they are killing the Rabbits in combat.

Traps are incredibly expensive, being 6 Grass and 2 Twigs, and there isn’t a stable way to renew Grass or Twigs in the Winter. Instead, intercept Rabbits while they are running back to their Rabbit Holes.

Rabbits will also appear to as white, though their mechanics and drops will not change. The only time Rabbits ever drop anything different is when they become Beardlings.

SPIDERS & PIGS (DEPENDABLE ALL YEAR AROUND)

Pigs and Spiders, in my opinion, should always be your primary source of Meat and Monster Meat.

Spider Dens should become tier-3 at the latest by mid-Winter, making them transportable. Until Spider Dens are tier-3, players can place a Fire Pit by the Spider Den and collect Monster Meat as needed.

Don

Pigs can be more difficult to farm as once killed a Pig will take 4 days to respawn. The way around waiting for Pigs to respawn is to build multiple Pig Houses near your base. Pig Houses can be crafted in the Structures tab by using 4 Pig Skin, 4 Boards, and 3 Cut Stones.

In Winter, I would make all of my meals that need meat with Monster Meat, and I would make my regular Meat and Morsels into Jerky. Since Monster Meat can only be eaten when mixed with other foods in the Crock Pot, there is no purpose for Monster Meat, unless you need extra rot.

If you’re a very aggressive player, chances are you’re going to have stacks of Monster Meat, and you’re not going to know what to do with it.

DRYING RACKS (BEST WAY TO USE MEAT)

Since players will be losing extra Sanity since Dusk and Night are much longer in Winter, I recommend that you build a few Drying Racks. Drying Racks require 3 Twigs, 3 Charcoal and 3 Rope (9 Grass). Build as many Drying Racks as you can, since Drying Racks take longer to yield a product, but I’d say have a minimum of 3.

Drying Racks can produce Small Jerky (Morsels) and regular Jerky (Meat).

Jerky provides players with 25 Hunger, 15 Sanity and 20 Health, while Small Jerky provides players with 12.5 Hunger, 10 Sanity and 8 Health.

Jerky has a 20-day lifespan, making it one of the longest-lasting foods in the games.

BIRDS (SUSTAINABLE AND USEFUL FOR WEAPONS, ESPECIALLY WITH WICKERBOTTOM)

Something you may want to be aware of in the Winter is the fact that birds change from being Redbirds to being Snowbirds.

For new players, a change in birds may not seem significant; however, the different Feathers birds drop will craft different weapons. Similar to Rabbits, players should try to attack birds instead of using Bird Traps by Winter.

In the Winter, killing a Snowbird will provide players with an Azure Feather. Players can craft a Blow Dart by using 2 Reeds, 1 Hound’s Tooth and 1 Azure Feather. Blow Darts deal 100 damage and should not be looked passed, especially in Don’t Starve Together.

If a player is Wickerbottom, get to know her books well. For example, Birds of the World can summon a multitude of snowbirds and Sleepytime Stories can help you put all the birds to sleep. Do you see where I’m going? More on why Wickerbottom is an amazing character to play here.

BIRDCAGES FOR UNLIMITED EGGS

Players may not want to make Meatballs all Winter long, so players may be interested in building themselves a Birdcage in hopes of trading undesirable meats like Monster Meat for Eggs.

Using Eggs for Crockpot recipes can yield some foods like Bacon and Eggs which provides high Hunger and Pierogies or Waffles (HAM) for high Health.

SUSPICIOUS DIRT PILE CHANGES / WINTER KOALEFANT (THE BEST FOR MEAT)

Another mechanic that changes in Winter is the Koalefant hunt. While Hunts can still be an Ewecus or Varg, the Koalefant will be a Winter Koalafant.

Winter Koalefants drop Winter Koalefant Trunks, which can be used to make a Puffy Vest. Puffy Vests restore 2 Sanity per minute and have an Insulation Factor of 240, making them one of the best pieces of chest armour for temperature control.

Save

I would recommend trying to hunt the Winter Koalafant if you are playing as Wigfrid since she has an extremely cheap head armour. Wigfrid’s Battle Helm gives players 80% Damage Reduction and has almost double the durability of a Football Helmet. Save that Pig Skin for a more critical Ham Bat.

Killing one Koalefant will reward players with 8 Meat, which should last them a few days. In Don’t Starve Together, players may have to rely on a few sources of Meat.

If you’re not struggling with staying warm in the Winter, character that will benefit you are Webber, Wendy, Wigfrid and Wolfgang, as their perks are more focussed on killing mobs and doing lots of damage.

HOUNDS CHANGE IN THE WINTER

Dependent on how lucky you are, you may not have seen the Red Hounds all Autumn, but starting on the first day of Winter, get ready to start seeing some Blue Hounds.

Blue Hounds will freeze nearby creatures upon death, and in Don’t Starve Together all Hounds can swim through water. Hounds will freeze nearby players if two die within 5 seconds of each other.

Blue Hounds have a 20% chance to drop a Blue Gem, which is used to craft the Ice Staff, Chilled Amulet, Salt Box or Blue Moonlens. New players will be most interested in the Ice Staff, and Chilled Amulet as the Saltbox and Blue Moonlens require quite a bit of exploration before they can be crafted.

MACTUSK & WALRUS CAMP [WINTER SPECIFIC MINIBOSS]

Bring out those powerful characters again, because you’re going to need to get your armour on again to fight the annoying MacTusk.

MacTusk can be considered a seasonal mini-boss who appears in most forms of Don’t Starve (DS, RoG and DST). Among MacTusk is his son Wee MacTusk and 2 Blue Hounds.

MacTusk is afraid of players and can be run out of the area until he becomes passive. Once MacTusk is passive, he will begin walking back to the Walrus Camp, which is when players can start bashing MacTusk to death.

Players may want to deal with Wee MacTusk and the 2 Blue Hounds first as they have much less health, though kiting them is also an option as they do not have range damage.

MacTusk, on the other hand, can shoot Blow Darts at players, making him a nuisance to deal with. I say, run him out of his biome! Smack him to death and collect yourself that sexy Walrus Tusk. Players can also receive a Tam o’ Shanter, which provides players with 6.7 Sanity per minute.

A Tam o’ Shanter only has a 25% chance to drop from killing MacTusk, but once it is collected, you can keep using a Sewing Kit to keep the durability up.

MacTusk only appears during the day, so if you haven’t chased him away from his camp by then, set up shop close by for the Night.

THE DEERCLOPS (SEASONAL MEGA-BOSS/GIANT)

The Deerclops is the seasonal Giant that appears in both Reign of Giants and Don’t Starve Together. The Deerclops has one form in Don’t Starve (RoG) but has two forms in Don’t Starve Together (DST).

The most important thing to know about the Deerclops is that it destroys Structures and trees, it has an attack period that you can kite, and it will always appear in the second half of Winter.

Players will know that the Deerclops is arriving when they hear him breathing into their speakers. Although you can use Beefalo to distract the Deerclops, Beefalo will most likely be frozen to death and rendered useless in the battle.

During Winter’s Feast in Don’t Starve Together, the Deerclops will take on a different appearance and will acquire a laser attack. The Winter’s Feast version of the Deerclops is a lot more difficult to kite than the regular version.

Killing the Deerclops will give you a Deerclops Eyeball, which is used to craft the Eyebrella. The Eyebrella is the best protection from Overheating and rain. Craft the Eyeball as soon as you can, because Spring means rain, rain, rain!

Check out this post for an in-depth guide to the Deerclops.

MOBS THAT DO NOT SPAWN IN THE WINTER

There are a few mobs that refuse to come out during Winter in Don’t Starve, and they include Frogs, Butterflies, Mosquitos,

MECHANICS THAT ARE INACTIVE IN THE WINTER

As mentioned earlier, some mechanics completely change in Winter. Some of these mechanics will prevent players from obtaining a resource or building a structure.

The following are the Mechanics that become inactive in the Winter

BEE BOXES

One of my favourite things to do when I’m playing Wendy is to set up Bee Boxes. The only thing is, if you don’t get Bee Boxes set up by the end of Autumn, you can’t start setting them up again until Summer since Bees are aggressive Killer Bees in the Spring.

Not only are bees aggressive in Spring, but as you might have guessed, Bees do not produce Honey in Winter. While Bees do not leave their nest, homeless Bees will still move around the map.

If you want to start Bee Boxes, never do them in the Winter or Spring, because you’ll have to wait for Summer to catch docile Bees anyways.

Although Bees do not produce Honey in Winter, if there is leftover Honey from the Autumn, players can collect it without aggroing the Bees inside the Bee Box.

MUSHROOM PLANTERS DON’T GROW

Chances are if this is the first Winter you are trying to survive or get through, you haven’t built yourself Mushroom Planters.

If you ever do get a chance to build Mushroom Planters before Winter take note that Mushrooms that are harvested turn to rot in Winter. Mushroom Planters will resume their work in Spring.

POISON BIRCHNUT TREES DO NOT SPAWN

Poison Birchnut Trees are notorious for being annoying spawns. While Poison Birchnut Trees do not move, they spawn in annoying Birchnutters, which can quickly kill players.

So, if you’re like me and you hate dealing with them, chop down some Birchnut Trees in the Winter!

CRAFTSMERM HOUSES DO NOT SPAWN MERMS

This one goes out to all of you Wurt players. You will not be able to build yourself a team of Merms in Winter because they hibernate in their Craftsmerm Houses.

Now, just because the Merms don’t spawn, doesn’t mean that you can’t craft Craftsmerm Houses until Spring arrives!

KLAUS & THE LOOT STASH

During Winter Don’t Starve Together, players will be able to find a Loot Stash in the Mosaic biome or the Deciduous Forest. During Winter’s Feast, players will be able to find the Loot Stash no matter what the season.

Players can unlock the Loot Stash by using a Deer Antler, that is dropped by a No-Eyed Deer after it charges at an object. Upon using the Deer Antler on the Loot Stash, Klaus will appear.

Klaus is another demanding seasonal boss, though players can choose not to summon him. Upon defeating Klaus, players can receive 4 bundles of supplies, some of which contain Blueprints for exclusive items.

GOALS AND PLANS FOR THE NEXT SEASON

Depending on what your spawn looks like and what resources you were able to collect were, there are a few things you want to get done in Winter. Some goals are achievable much more manageable when playing Don’t Starve Together because you have teammates to help you through, so make sure that you scale things based on what resources you truly need, rather than what you can collect in future Winters.

CRAFT YOURSELF AN ICE BOX (“SHOULD HAVE DONE IT BEFORE”)

If you haven’t crafted yourself an Ice Box by the end of Autumn, make sure to work towards crafting one by the end of Winter.

To craft an Ice Box, you will need 2 Gold Nuggets, 1 Board, and 1 Gear. Ice Boxes will help reduce food spoilage rates by 50%, and Ice will never melt in them. Ice will be beneficial for building Ice Flingomatics and for cooling down in the Summer. My thoughts on Ice? Collect as much as you can and put it in an Ice Box because you’ll never know when you need it and stockpiling isn’t a bad idea anyway!

If you can craft yourself multiple Ice Boxes, I would place one at a second base. Having multiple Ice Boxes in different areas of the map will ensure that players do not have to return home to get food.

If you are playing WX-78, chances are you won’t need an Ice Box, since WX-78 doesn’t mind stale food.

BUILD YOURSELF LIGHTNING RODS (NECESSARY FOR SPRING)

Lightning Rods are relatively inexpensive and prove players with a 40 area radius (~7 Pitch Forks) of protection from Lightning Strikes.

Lightning becomes a huge problem in Spring, so any way you can bring down the chances of burning, the better.

PRESTIHATITATOR (LAST CHANCE BEFORE SUMMER)

Since there are no Rabbits in Spring, players should build a Prestihatitator at the latest in Winter or they will not have access to a whole tier of equipment for a season.

The Prestihatitator requires 4 Rabbits, 4 Boards and 1 Top Hat.

ICE FLINGOMATICS (OPTIONAL)

You don’t really need Ice Flingomatics until you are getting ready for Summer. However, placing Ice Flingomatics also depends on whether players are planning on migrating to the Oasis/Desert biome during Summer.

Don't Starve More Save Slots No Deposit

When playing single-player Don’t Starve, I tend to migrate; however, in Don’t Starve Together, we usually build 2 or 3 Ice Flingomatics. Given how many chances there are of the base burning with 4 people, we’d rather not risk it!

MODS THAT ARE USEFUL FOR THE WINTER

When it comes to dealing with Winter I like using the following mods:

Combined Status Mod [DS] &[DST]: displays Health, Hunger, Sanity, Temperature, Seasons, Moon Phase and World Day.

Show Me (Origin) [DST]: Shows all-important stats, including Mob Hit Points, Food Stats, Thermal Stone temperature, Durability, Insulation Amount, Waterproofing, and similar information of allies.

CONCLUSION

So while Winter is a lot more difficult than Autumn, after a few wipeouts Winter was definitely manageable. For me, the most important things to keep in mind were to always keep a Fire Pit and Camp Fire built in my inventory and to always keep my Thermal Stone by my weapon slot so I can easily see it.

Staying warm is going to be a lot more manageable if you have lots of Fire Pits across the map and if you ever run into trouble, burn a forest down. Trees are expendable.
